BOOK SUMMARY 
In The Symposium, Plato presents a series of speeches on the nature of love, delivered by various Athenian figures at a banquet. Through these speeches—culminating in Socrates’ account of a teaching he received from Diotima—the dialogue explores love (or eros) as a force that can lead the soul from physical desire toward philosophical and spiritual understanding. The text combines dramatic structure with metaphysical ideas and remains one of Plato’s most influential works.
